Balanced Diets
A balanced diet can make a world of difference
There are surprisingly only a few characteristics of a well balanced diet. Many people think of a healthy diet as being one which has many guidelines, rules and restrictions. But this simply isn't the case. The food industry and the other big companies involved in fitness and health want you to believe so, because if everyone incorperated a balanced diet in their lifestyle, they would lose out on a lot of money. Sad but true.
The characteristics of a Well Balanced Diet
- At least 5 portioned meals per day
Your standard American 3 big and bulky meals per day is not healthy. The big breakfast, lunch and dinner meals do more harm than good. Of course we all need to eat, but eating infrequent large meals puts the body in a state in which it stores fat. Most people cannot eat only 3 meals a day without experiencing and ignoring hunger. When you ignore hunger your body prepares itself by storing as much possible fat as it can by any other food that you do eat. Eating as much as you need to to satisfy hunger but also not gorging yourself is the ideal dietary method.
- Macronutrient Ratios
Macronutrient is the proper terminology for protein, carbohydrates and fats. Ideally one should aim to consume approximately 50% carbohydrates (complex carbs, the good kind), 35% protein and 15% fat. As far as protein is concerned, there is generally just one type of protein. Great protein sources are eggs, fish and meat. Carbohydrates from natural healthy foods provide the body with much needed energy, cut down on the bad carbohydrates from processed foods. And try to eliminate saturated fat from your fat consumption.
- Consistency
It's best to stay consistent and steady with your diet. One of the definining characteristics of a balanced diet is consistency. You can't simply choose to ignore all of the important aspects of a healthy diet for a span of several days or weeks and expect to keep that fat off and remain healthy. It's all about finding a workable diet plan that you enjoy more than dread.
Following those few key aspects of a
well balanced diet will help ensure a healthy body. You should of course supplement this with regular exercise, whether it be resistance training with freeweights or aerobic training (cardiovascular).
