Basic Exercise Programs
Many people are settling for less and seeking out cookie cutter canned exercise programs and diet plans because they lack fundamental knowledge of fitness. Before you embark on any journey in life, it is always best to know as much about the journey as possible. This principle particularly holds true for fitness. So let's refer to "Basic Exercise Programs" now as "Ideal Exercise Programs", simply for the purpose of accuracy. Because you will find that your average-run of the mill-basic exercise program is less than satisfactory.
The Ideal Exercise Program
The type of exercise plan you choose to follow is depedant on your physical goals. If you wish to lose fat then the type of training you perform will have to be condusive towards that goal. The same applies for those wishing to build muscle mass. If you are simply trying to maintain good health, there is also a generalized version of training for that as well.
- Fat loss exercise techniques
An ideal exercise program with the goal of fat loss in mind will emphasize cardiovascular training (in other words, aerobic training). This includes any type of exercise which raises the heart rate to a significant degree at a period of time usually greater than 10 minutes. Some activities that will help achieve this are running, biking, swimming, speed walking, sporting events, etc. etc... Supplementing this sort of training with resistance training (machine resistance or freeweights) will also help build muscle, which burns fat. - Muscle building techniques
The primary training protocol will be resistance training. Resistance training includes the use of machine resistance or freeweights (dumbbells and freeweights). In my opinion, freeweights give you much more of an advantage for developing a well balanced muscle strength. Simply because machines usually restrict your path of motion and stabilizer muscles do not have a chance to grow.
Whether your goal is to lose fat or build muscle, you should keep the idea of specificity and "personal customization" in mind. You shouldn't settle for less and simply follow a basic exercise program, but follow an exercise plan that you enjoy. This is the only way you will stick with it and make progress in the future.
