How to Lose Love Handles

We know, there's nothing to love about love handles!

The term love handles refers to the fat that hangs over and off of the oblique muscles.  To put it shortly, there's not one exercise or supplement that you can take that will directly help you lose love handles.  This is an issue I write about regularly when it concerns those who want to target fat loss in specific areas of the body.

Knowing how to lose love handles is knowing how to lose fat in general.  I know, I know, it's not what you wanted to hear.  Most people reading this article came here hoping for some miracle cure. Well, I'm sorry, it's not me, it's science!  In order to lose those unsightly love handles, you have to follow the principles of calories in vs. calories out.

Your body burns a certain amount of calories each day.  This is called your BMR (or your basal metabolic rate).  If you combine your BMR with the calories that intentional physical daily activity brings (like exercise, manual labor, or even just walking) then you have your total caloric expenditure.  To find out your BMR, click here.

Once you know your BMR, you'll be a step closer to being able to lose love handles.  Lets say within a given week, your average daily caloric expenditure is 2,500 calories.  That's how many calories your body burns entirely in 1 day, and 2,500 is the "out" in the phrase "calories in vs. calories out".  The "calories in" is your diet!  It's how much you consume.  So in order to start losing love handles, you need to consume less than 2,500 calories.  The bigger the deficit, the more weight you lose.  If you consumed 2,000 calories on average per day, then you would lose 1 lb. a week (a 500 calorie deficiency is 3,500 calories a week, and there are 3,500 calories in 1 pound of fat).

And that's all it takes to lose love handles.  It's also all it takes to lose fat *every where else* in your body including your belly fat, thighs, glutes, neck, chin, simply everywhere!
