How to Lose Belly Fat

Getting rid of belly fat is all about the diet.

The very first thing I want to stress is that you can't target a specific part of the body to lose fat.  Performing every abdominal exercise in the world won't help you specifically lose belly fat.  Many people are under the assumption that if they start doing 100 ab crunches that over time they will begin to see a shredded six pack.  This assumption is wrong.

The key to seeing abs or having a fatless stomach region, is all about your bodyfat percentage.  If your bodyfat percentage isn't low enough, it doesn't matter how many ab exercises you perform, you will simply never see them.  So this article is really about how to lower your bodyfat percentage, which in essence is the ultimate quest for everyone, which is losing fat.  So if your question is how to lose stomach fat, these are the necessary steps you must take:

  1. Eat more frequently, at least 5 meals per day in a smaller portion fashion.
  2. Consume good (complex) carbs earlier on in the day, and avoid consuming them later in the day.  It's best to eat foods more consistent with protein later on in the day in your later meals.
  3. Be sure you're consuming less than your body is burning in terms of calories.  Read our article about BMR to help you understand this.
  4. Exercise.  While exercising isn't 100% necsesary to help you lose bodyfat and see those abs, it relates to #3 by widening the gap.  The more calories your body burns, the better.
  5. Perform abdominal exercises.  If you build up your abdominal muscles, it will result in hypertrophy, which is an enlargement of those muscles.  Once you get a low enough bodyfat percentage, you will be able to see ab muscles even easier.

Following those 5 simple steps as noted above will help you lose belly fat.  There's no ifs ands or buts about the situation.  Following the above steps will also help you lose fat every where else on your body: arm flab; thighs; butt; hips; neck, you name it and it will help.
